This City Is

Large scale projection describing Bristol through the eyes of the internet by Naho Matsuda & Paul Angus

Projection of text onto a building which reads "This city is the most cycle friendly city in the UK, but still has a huge car problem"

Being in public space has changed, and it has become difficult to sense how a city ‘feels’ and how to connect to the shared sentiment of a place. ‘This City Is…’ projected collectivised streams of consciousness back onto the city. Through large-scale projection, we saw Bristol as a continuous list of updates, ranging from personal opinions to public announcements. The many layers, voices and emotions that existed at that very moment were beamed right back onto the city itself.

This project was coded by Paul Angus, and was first commissioned by O, Miami in 2020.

For Control Shift 2020 ‘This City Is,’ was projected onto the facade of Bristol Central Library.
