Algorave

Live-coded electronic dance music by Heavy Lifting, Hellocatfood, Rumblesan, Joana Chicau, David Matunda, YAXU & Anima Techne

Two musicians on a stage looking at laptops, digital sound wave visuals are projected next to them.

To kick off our Feeling Machines Weekender in March 2023, Algorave combined algorithms and raving to bring live-coded electronic dance music and live algorithmic visuals to Lost Horizon HQ.

At Algoraves, artists and electronic musicians make futuristic rhythms and beats using live algorithmic processes. All code is projected – so you can see how the artists make sound and visuals live.

Since starting in 2012, Algorave has established a large global community that encourages experimentation, creates original and open source software tools, and most importantly fun dance music events!

These futuristic beats were great company for the Giant Tactile Robots and installations from Bristol-based artists also featured in the space.

About the artists

Heavy Lifting

Heavy Lifting is a main solo project by Lucy Cheesman, using TidalCycles live-coding software to scramble samples into seasick beats. For fans of woodwork and minor deities.

Hellocatfood

Hellocatfood AKA Antonio Roberts is an artist and curator based in Birmingham, UK, working primarily with video, code, and sound. He is critically engaged with the themes surrounding network culture and in his practice explores how technology continues to shape ideas of creation, ownership, and authorship. As a performing visual artist and musician he utilises live coding techniques to demystify technology and reveal its design decisions, limitations, and creative potential.

Rumblesan

Rumblesan AKA Guy John is an algoraver, shape-thrower, and excess project starter. He live codes visuals, primarily with Improviz which he built. He also plays with Pure Data and SuperCollider to create music.

Joana Chicau

Joana Chicau is a designer,  researcher and coder, with a background in choreography and performance. Her work moves across user experience, interface design and branding, workshops and performative events. She provides consultancy on project development and strategy.

David Matunda

David is a web developer and digital artist working mostly in code (JavaScript) to realise their work in contexts like the web browser, live code performance or machine plotting. They are interested in the visual outputs of algorithms as well as the cultural significance of algorithms in the histories of pre-diasporic Afro communities. His practice is informed by history, politics, fashion, religion, cultural uses of technology and ideas around how we understand wealth and value.

YAXU

YAXU AKA Alex McLean is a co-founder of Alograve. They live in Sheffield, UK, working full time exploring algorithmic patterns, as part of a four-year UKRI-funded “future leaders fellowship” with Then Try This. They made the TidalCycles live coding environment and has performed algorithmic and live coded music widely since 2000.

Anima Techne

Anima Techne AKA Simeon Castle is a biodesigner who uses evolutonary algorithms and biological data to create music.
