Rare Earth Walks
Metal detecting walk by Max Dovey
Max took us on a guided walk and metal detecting expedition, exploring the sounds and stories contained in rare metals. Together we tuned into subsoil frequencies, unearthed rare treasures and turned our found metals into precious energy. For those unable to join us in person, we used a proxy protest DIY harness to take video callers along with us.
Rare Earth Walks are site specific excursions that ask, ‘Where do rare earth elements come from?’ Mapping geographies of mining and extraction with cultural myths surrounding stones and minerals, these guided walks delve into the ecological trauma forged into our technological devices.
