The Almost
A painting commission exploring Feeling Machines by Asmaa Jama
Inspired by Feeling Machines and painted for the programme’s visual identity, Asmaa’s painting explores ideas around the edges of technology. Where do humans interact with technology? Where does the interaction begin / end? Through leaking, glitching, textures that can be found in works by painters like Frank Bowling, they think in bright tones, neon yellows and other colours that appear moving, frenetic and alive. Asmaa writes:
“This figure emerged out of the backdrop, mostly translucent and being held. They felt quite delicate, like their grip on the material was tenuous as well. I liked the way the figures ended up holding each other, the almost closeness between them. I am interested in this, the almost. So many of our connections ‘digitally’ blur the lines between being tangible/material. I think, in my interactions with loved ones across the world, there are places where we can almost line up against each other + yet are held back”
Co-commission with Bristol & Bath Creative R+D
The painting was displayed at our Feeling Machines Weekender exhibition at St Anne’s House. Watch this space for a blog about Asmaa’s painting coming soon!
